The best pub quiz in Enfield?

There are

numerous pub quizzes in Enfield but the one at The Stag on a Monday is one of

the longest running and last night, after a long hiatus, my friends and I

returned to the pub to test our knowledge.

here is Martin who has been posing the questions for years and engenders an

inclusive entertaining atmosphere with his microphone. The questions start at 9.30pm, entry is just £1 and

there are two rounds of 25 questions on topics ranging from history to current

events, from cult TV to geography.

Many of the

teams taking part had names we recognized from years ago and it’s nice to see

so many people still quizzing after all this time. In round one we dropped a

few points and were chasing a lead of 7 going into the second round, so for us

it was more about having fun than seriously hoping to win but we came a

respectable 5th and earned ourselves a bottle of wine for our novice

efforts.

After the main

quiz there’s a bonus question. For a £1 entry fee you get a strip of raffle

tickets and if yours is pulled out you win £10 and get the chance to answer one

question for the pot, which rolls over every week. Last night it was up to £250

and the question was the appropriately tricky “apart from the Beatles, who had

the first chart success with a Lennon/McCartney arrangement?”. Unsurprisingly

nobody knew but we have seen people win large sums here in the past so you

could get lucky.

All in all we had an enjoyable night and

came away determined to return next week to better our score. We’ll be reading

the newspapers in the mean time though – at least we can get those current

affairs questions right next time!
