Why is getting a late-night drink in Enfield so difficult?

After a night out in central London on Saturday, my boyfriend and I got back to Enfield Town station at 12.30am. There were a few people around but the town was reasonably quiet, with most people queueing for a taxi at the station.

Walking past the market place, we decided we would like to go for a last drink and as the Kings Head looked to still be open we approached the door staff.

Unfortunately, due to some bizarre licensing regulation that Enfield Council have the pub is not allowed to let people in after midnight. It is open until 1.30pm but only to anyone who's in there before 12.

This struck us as absurd, though I know it to be the same at The Stag just up the road. We were smartly dressed, not drunk and simply in search of one last drink on the way home. Why does Enfield Council insist on this rule?

I would imagine that trouble is much more likely to be caused by the large groups Enfield sometimes gets on their way to the clubs - who would be gone by midnight anyway - and that this is damaging the businesses involved, and consequently the local economy. It's no wonder the taxi queue was the busiest place in town....
