New Mexican restaurant, La Mexicana, opens in Enfield town centre

Walking into Enfield town last week I was delighted to see

that a new Mexican restaurant and bar was taking the place of the recently

departed Wimpy. As luck would have it I had a pre-arranged dinner with my

boyfriend and my soon to be in-laws so a quick phone call later and we were

booked in for the first Friday night that La Mexicana was open.

Clearly there are still a few things for La Mexicana to sort

out – they hadn’t managed to get their licence approved so it was bring your

own, but this suited us just fine, saving us a good £20. It was also pretty clear that a number of

the waiting staff were very new to the business, but the friendly, hard-working

manager was on hand to steer the newbies in the right direction and for the

most part everything went without a hitch.

The décor is spot on with ever so slightly cheesy Mexican

murals on the walls (cactus, as you can imagine, features highly) and bright

colours everywhere. We had to wait quite a while for our food – probably an

hour from sitting down – but the manager apologised and brought us what were

genuinely the tastiest tortilla chips I’ve ever eaten and the food wasn’t far behind.

Everything was absolutely delicious – the chicken and rib-eye fajitas (£10.50)

came with plentiful onion, pepper and sauces (extra salsa was brought at no extra

charge), the beef burrito (£8.95) was tasty and there was a wide variety of

other, more unusual, dishes including some smaller plates and a few sharing

platters on the menu.

Once La Mexicana gets over its teething issues (the fire

alarm in the kitchen kept going off) and the bar upstairs is able to open, it’s

sure to make a great addition to this end of town.

Has anyone else been there yet? Did you have a good meal? Is

the service improving?

went here once to try the food, which is obviously new from the usual the town can offer, coming there though had been very disappointing, firstly, we waited 1 hour to get a seat (there were even a couple who offered us their seat because they had waited sooo long for their food and wanted to leave), and another 2 hours to get our food, so all 3 hours waiting time to have the taste of what this place can offer, and sad to say, the waiting was not worth it, food was nothing you expected to, it was nothing special from the usual you can do at home. (my hub even told me that we could have stayed home and do the food at home), and my 9 year old son who was sooo keen to try their food as he loves mexican food, cried when the food came as he waitied soooo long to have it, he cried because he was soooo upset that it took that long to have it! and towards the end of the meal he said, we shall never go back to this horrible place! and the manager didn't even bother to offer us any form of comfort that evening! (imagine a family of 4 with a young child and a pregnant woman!) definitely will not be coming back!

I went there about 4 weeks ago and was very dissapointed with the food. The hot food was served on cold grubby plates. Willing to give it a go we ordered some nachos to start but they turned out to be very dissapointing and appeared to have been put together by a small child with no concept of presentation. The main course arrived and the chips were very poor and terribly greasy. The chicken I had with a sauce on top had clearly been reheated in the microwave. Very poor all round. The decor was fun and the menu presented on paper well. On leaving they had chaps in mexican outfits doing some marketting in the street. It's a shame that their core business is so much lacking as it could be a nice contrast for the town.

Sounds like things might be on the up. Will plan another visit and report back! Look out also for an upcoming poll on Enfield's best restaurant.
