Wanted! Young People Committed to Social Action on a Local and Global Level

Young people aged 18-30 who would like to undertake a free learning programme with the potential to become involved in a fully funded international exchange and become community leaders working towards social change and sustainable development in Enfield and Internationally as part of the Active Citizens Programme are currently being recruited.
The Active Citizens Programme -
Active Citizens is a global network of community leaders that is being developed by the British Council and local civil society partners in participating countries. The goal is to build understanding and trust between communities by establishing an enduring global network of community leaders, who can work together to address the global issues of the 21st century.
Active Citizens uses international cultural relations to help tackle the major challenges facing communities. These include issues arising from differences in race, religion or culture, access to sustainable livelihoods, environmental pollution and protection, health and educational opportunities, democratic participation, social exclusion and opportunities for women.
The Role -
Faith Matters is looking to recruit young people aged 18-30 who would like to undertake a free learning programme and become community leaders working towards social change.
As an Active Citizens participant, you will:
ï· Participate in 4 one day workshops (February 2011), in which you will develop the skills and knowledge to become an Active Citizen in your own community.
These workshops will introduce you to the themes of:
o Identity and culture
o Dialogue
o Local and Global Citizenship
o Social Action Project Planning and Sustainability
ï· Meet with and share ideas, experiences and participate in activities with Active Citizens participating in a similar learning programme in Palestine and Lebanon and who will be visiting the UK (March 2011)
ï· Have the potential to be selected to participate in an outward international exchange in Summer 2011 to visit Active Citizens programme participants in other countries. (Note, that this will involve an additional time commitment of a one day travel preparation workshop, and up to a week outside of the UK)
Use the understanding and experiences you have received throughout the course of the programme to deliver a social action project of your choice with your community. Working with other Active Citizens participating in the programme, you will have ongoing support and mentoring from Faith Matters throughout the process.
Person Specification -
ï· Commitment to:
o The aims and ethos of the Active Citizens programme
o Making a difference
o Participation in the learning programme, including four core
workshops to take place in February and engaging in informal learning
and shared experiences with Active Citizens visiting the UK in March.
o Working with peers to design and implement at social action project of your choice in your community
ï· An interest in:
o Engaging in cross-cultural, inter-community and international dialogue
o Becoming a part of an international network of community leaders, or
Active Citizens, working towards sustainable community development
ï· Participants should also:
o Be flexible
o Possess enthusiasm
o Enjoy working together as a part of a teams
Please note that the Active Citizens programme is an ongoing process. Though learning and development, and international exchanges are subject to a brief timeline; you will become a member of an international network of Active Citizens and continue to engage in dialogue, social action and sustainable community development, bringing benefits to your community in the long term.
